I'm sure you've read those fanfics about Harry losing a sense (sight, sound, etc.) and gaining powers to compensate for the loss. This is a bit different, although to you, not much. Harry is injured, intentional or accidental, that causes danger to one of his major senses. Instead of losing the sense, however, they become much more inhanced, as does his power due to the severity of the danger that Harry was in. New powers could also be a consequence of the near loss damage to one of the major senses.
1) During school, Voldemort could be alive or dead, or die sometime during the story.
2) Can be slash.
3) Damage could be inflicted by either Dursleys, Voldemort, DeathEaters, yard work, Quidditch, etc. surprise me.
4) Keep the powers linked to the sense in question. Don't let Harry be able to hear heart beats when he nearly lost his sight, or let him be overly sensitive to everything by almost losing his sense of taste.
5) Remus has to be able to help Harry, at least for a little while, in the story.
6) Something happens to the Dursleys (ie- they move, are persecuted, dead, etc.) that makes sure Harry cannot go back to them, thus leaving him into the care of a professor, or staying at the school.
7) After gaining the skills, Harry's link to Voldemort becomes more tangible, as if he were really there and thus gives better information of the visions he has. However, not all the visions can be of the present or the future.
8) No miraculous, nearly forgotten charm, spell, or potion can heal the damage miraculously or take away the skills Harry acquires because of it.
That is all for now, perhaps after I get more sleep I'll send you more.
