On That Hot Summer Day

"K'so nezumi..."

"Baka neko..."

The blistering heat of the Japanese sumer was taking its toll. The streets were bare as slick waves wafted off the roads and sidewalks. Many were bemoaning an inadequate A/C, but did little more than grumble over it.

"... k'so nezumi..."

"Baka... neko..."

Sohma Shigure's house was a contracor's dream and an insurance company's nightmare. Minor disagreements between two of the teens who lived under the author's roof quickly resulted in architectual damage. Earlier that week, an unfortunately accurate kick, which sent one teen flying over the roof, had said teen smack into the hard-working unit, and as all cats do while in flight, the teen held on despite continuing momentum.

The result?

"... k'so... nezu~umi..."

A large house in a Japanese summer with no air conditioning.

"... ba~aka neko..."

Thankfully, the two ton appliance did not harm the boy beyond a concussion and a headache. The continued heat, however, was breeding irritability quickly. Tempers rose at an astounding rate, and even the sweet-tempered young lady living in Shigure's house was angered enough to spit explicives that would send a sailor blushing to his mother. Shigure, ever the author, wrote them down to be used in later books.

No work was done on his newest writing project in the stiffling heat, and as he lazily fanned himself, he glared at the two boys who started it all; Kyou laying on his stomach, clad only in his baggy cargo pants, and Yuki, who found sanctuary on his back sprawled over the linoleum kitchen floor, wearing a muscle tank and swimming trucks. After all...

"... k'so nezumi..." Kyou muttered between inaudible pants.

... it was improper to laze around in your underwear when you had a live-in female guest.

Yuki cracked a violet eye open a sliver, "Baka neko..."

Ignore that the family curse left little to her imagination to begin with.

Shigure sat his fan on his knee and sighed. "Boys... stop fighting."

The two teens murmured disgruntled assents and gave the hot house it's first few minutes of peace since the beginning of the season.

"... k'so nezumi."

Or not.
